This study tackles the Aesthetics of the Totem Symbol in the American Temporary Art. The study consists of four chapters. The first chapter deals with the methodological framework of this study represented by the problem of the study: the application of the totem and its symbols in arts based on intellectual, philosophical, and aesthetical studies.Investigating aesthetics of symbols in the art is tantamount to engaging in the first cult forms of the primitive society. In tribal and temporary communities, the totem has psychological and social dimensions. The study found that totem symbols have been reflected in all the surroundings of man, in general, and the art in particular though primitive cult represented by totemism which has generated sacred symbols with primitive beliefs and opinions in the American contemporary artist. This study aims at shedding light on the totem symbol in the American temporary art, and at exploring these symbols by using mechanisms for operating a symbol in the American temporary art, and this represents the problem of the study. The goal of the study is to explore the aesthetics of totem symbol in the American temporary art by exploring mechanisms of using the totem in art. The study is limited to examine aesthetics of totem symbol in the American temporary art within the period from 1982 to 2011 in the united state of America to examine aesthetics in philosophical vision both theoretically and procedurally. The second chapter tackles the "theoretical framework". It includes four topics; topic one deals with "symbolism of aesthetics in the philosophical thought. It reviews some opinions and philosophical issues starting from aesthetics in the Greek philosophical thought through modern thought up to contemporary thought. The second topic tackles with the symbol in thought and art (mechanisms and applications). It tracks the symbol and its aesthetics in the temporary philosophical thought. It also deals with the relationship between the symbol and color.Topic three deals with the concept of totem which reviews different primitive cults that were considered as the origin of totem, up to various beliefs and psychological theories governing the image of the totem symbol. It also deals with the origins of totemism, causes of its emergence, and the totem as a symbolic system. The fourth topic copes with aesthetic approaches to contemporary American popular arts that are different in totem symbols. The theoretical framework concludes with a set of indicators that the researcher has made use of (analysis of the study sample). The third chapter tackles the study procedures which are based on the application of the totem symbols in the American contemporary art and exploring its aesthetics by using the study procedures represented by its sample, methodology and analysis the sample of the study (20 samples). The fourth chapters includes the results reached by researcher, prominent of which are the following:1-The geometrical system in some samples has achieved ideal aesthetical values based on the nature of color and linear consistency.2-The American artist tends to take care of the technical and performing aspects within the limits of the material (cloth, plastic, copper, skin, wood, colors, etc), then combining and harmonizing them to give the general formation of the totem symbol its special aesthetic dimension.3-The American temporary artist depends in some of the totem works with abstract shapes on the dedoublement (division of shapes to two identical opposite parts that could contribute in the formation of the ideal aesthetics of totem symbol. The researcher has reached to the following conclusions:1-Aesthetic values of totem art is the basis for proposed symbolic artistic scenes in the temporary American art due to the processes of abstraction and renovation 2-The totem symbol has assumed several shapes in the contemporary American art through the symbolic image that expresses totem thoughts (worshipping, power, motion, vitality, life, etc) which are based on the legend systems that constitute the underlying aesthetic and intellectual foundation in the search for the origin (reference). The researcher made the following recommendations:1-Make use of this study in human studies of similar topics such as literature and criticism to contribute to expanding this study geographically and aesthetically.2-Develop an academic curriculum in the departments of the College of Fine Arts that deals with post-modernism American temporary arts. This will enable students of Fine Arts to gain educational and artistic skills The researcher suggested that the following studies be conducted:1-Totem representations in the Arabic contemporary arts 2-Naturalization aesthetics in the American contemporary arts
