الملخص

This study aimed at investigating the effect of dropping out English literature from Sudanesesyllabuses on secondary schools students’ English vocabulary knowledge. The study highlightedthe importance of teaching literature among the students of secondary schools and its role indeveloping English language and its direct positive effect on language vocabulary in bothsecondary and university level. Moreover, the study confirmed the great role of Englishliterature in improving and increasing English vocabulary knowledge in particular and otherskills in general.The study looked into the views of teachers on the absence of English literaturefrom Sudanese Syllabuses. The researcher adopted the experimental and descriptive methodsand used population and sample of the study that included a test for hundred secondary schoolstudents and a questionnaire for hundred secondary school teachers as tools for collecting data.After analyzing the collected data by SPSS program, the results have shown that teaching andlearning literature play a vital role in developing the English language process. In addition, itcreates interesting and enthusiastic learning atmosphere within class room interaction.Moreover, it confirmed that the absence of English literature has negatively affected onstudent’s English vocabulary knowledge. The study also emphasized the significance ofteaching English literature and its effective role in expanding student’s English languagevocabulary knowledge. The study also offered some recommendations to the related authoritiessuch as the importance of teaching English literature for students and that it should be includedin the curricula and its exam question should be obligatory in Secondary School CertificateExamination. Additionally, training teachers regularly in the methods and techniques ofteaching literature is so necessary in order to achieve its intended aims.
