الملخص
This was a cross-sectional descriptive study conducted atOmdurman Military and Maternity Teaching Hospitals from Marchto May 2003. The goal was to determine the seroprevalence ofHIV and syphilis among pregnant women, and to assess possiblerisk factors for these infections. The study recruited 406 antenatalclinic attendees. Two women were HIV seropositive, with prevalence rate0.5%, they were both married to polygamous military personnels, living in Umbada. One of the women had history of caesareansection. The seroprevalence of syphilis was 0.7% (three womenwere seropositive). These women were primary school graduates, two of them of low socioeconomic status with history of sexuallytransmitted infections. The study did not, however, prove a statistically significantlink between seropositivity and the possible risk factors.Recommendations included implementation of certaineducational and preventive measures as well as further studies.
