This thesis aimed to know the effect of using environmentaleducation activities on developing the environmental awareness of thesixth grade students in Jerusalem. The sample of the study consisted of121 students from two different schools, one for males and the other forfemales. The sample was divided into four classes, one class from eachschool was randomly chosen as an experimental group, while the otherone as a control group. The present study has aimed to answer the following main researchquestions:1-Can we fuse environmental education activities in sixth gradescience curriculum?2-What is the effect of teaching the science unit ofmicroorganisms (without using the environmental educationactivities) on developing environmental awareness among thesixth grade students in Jerusalem?11 3-What is the effect of implementing environmental educationactivities on developing environmental awareness among the sixthgrade students in Jerusalem?4-Is there any effect of implementing environmental educationactivities on developing environmental awareness due to gender?5-Is there any effect of implementing environmental educationactivities on developing environmental awareness of females?6- Is there any effect of implementing environmental educationactivities on developing environmental awareness of males?7-Is there any effect of implementing environmental educationactivities on developing environmental awareness due to theinteraction between method of teaching and gender?To answer the questions of the study, five null hypotheses havebeen formulated. Three instruments were designed for this study: Anachievement test in environmental education, environmentaleducation activities, and an interview. Specialists in education havevalidated these instruments. The reliability of the test has beencalculated to be (0.87).Thirteen environmental education activities related to themicroorganisms unit of the sixth grade science curriculum have beendesigned for the experimental group. Before they have studied thescience unit of microorganisms, and participating in theenvironmental education activities (which were designed for theexperimental group only), students have sat for a pretest inenvironmental education. After studying the science unit by allgroups, and participating in environmental education activities by experimental groups, all groups sat for a posttest in environmentaleducation.Both quantitative and qualitative analysis showed that students inexperimental groups (both males and females), performedsignificantly better in both the posttest and the interview, thanstudents of the control groups. This can be explained as a result of thedevelopment of environmental awareness toward environmentalissues among the experimental group. The study recommended the following: First, applying fusedcurriculum between science and environmental education. Anotherrecommendation is extending the environmental education activitiesand methods of teaching used in this study to other schools anddistricts.
