الملخص

Tests are familiar in educational field; vocabulary tests have been adopted as measures of general ability or intelligence and as measures of achievement in special subject fields. It has been presumed that vocabulary can be learnt through reading and practicing other language skills. The study aims to :Present with effective techniques for future remedial work, to draw attention of EFL teachers and syllabus designers to the importance of constructing vocabulary tests, to investigate the difficulties facing teachers in testing vocabulary, provide EFL teachers with effective ways of testing vocabulary, and to emphasize the importance of awareness of meaning of the words. The study followed the descriptive analytical method. A questionnaire is used as a means of data collected, it consisted of ten statements then distributed to basic schools in Wed Medani in order to elicit their view. The collection data were analyzed through Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS) by using tables and graphs. The study comes up with many results, among such: Translating the meaning of the new items into student’s native language interrupts them in testing, More drills and exercises reduce the problems of vocabulary tests, using the new items in various contexts, helps the students to recognize them easily in testing, and adequate recycling of the new item in the syllabus improves the learners’ performance in testing. Upon the previous results the study recommended that students should be exposed to more spelling and testing practice, drills should be designed periodically, teacher at basic level should not present many new items in a limited period of time some of the new items should let for students to guess, students should practice the use of the new items by attempting more drills and exercise, and syllabus designers should be aware of the importance in the student's textbooks.
