Studies On Some Cultural Practices As Safe Alternative To The Insecticidal Control Of Tomato Pests

الملخص

The study was carried out in 2004-2005 season in the farm of the Department of Horticulture, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Khartoum. The study was conducted, particularly, to find out whether tomato yield can be increased without the use of the conventional hazardous synthetic insecticides, and to assess the effect of manipulation of cultural practices as an alternative to the control of pests and diseases of tomato. The treatments applied were: 1- improved some cultural practices, included: staking, leaves mulch , chicken manure , and planting in flat ridges "Mustaba". 2- Use of a repellent plant "Helba" as intercropping crop. 3- Use of a conventional insecticide carbaryl (sevin) to control insect pests of tomato in comparison to the cultural control practices. 4- Flowing the normal cultural practices to compare with treatments in 1-3. The results of the study showed that: • Cultural practices are very effective against: bollworm, rottening, sunscald , blossom end rot, and rodents. • The insecticide, sevin, showed better results in controlling early blight, fruits cracking and increased the total weight and total number of fruits. On the light of the results we recommend that cultural practices are potential safe control measures of tomato pests and production. Intercropping fenugreek with tomato plants need further studies and evaluation in the future.
