الملخص

In the course of this study, investigation was carried out in Khartoum province chiefly within Omdunnan, Khartoum and Khartoum North towns, mainly for infested garlic Allium sativum (L.). Public markets of Omdunnan were chosen as an experimental area for the supply of infested stored garlic. Eriophyes tulipae (k.), was found to be the main parasitic mite causing infestation to garlic with different degree levels. The identification was confirmed and described. Three significant varieties were encountered and recognized as Dongola, Barbar and Zalengae varieties.Within infested bulbs, adults, eggs and immature stages were visible together with dead individuals and cast skin. The feeding habit was clearly observed and symptoms of infestation were remarkable.The degree of infestation with reference to three varieties of garlic was estimated and the highest percentage infestation was manifested in Barbar variety while lower percentage infestation was shown in Dongola and Zalengae successively.The percentage weight loss of garlic bulbs and cloves stored in three different techniques or treatments (Lot, spread and sack) was determined.Similarly the percentage infestation was assessed in the same manner. The percentage infestation was found to be directly proportional with time especially in lots and sacks for garlic bulbs and cloves.For control phostoxin, methyl-bromide and tap-water were tested thoroughly for a period of four months. The percentage reduction in weight and infestation were recorded. Phostoxin exhibited significantly higher degree of control over methyl-bromide. Tap-water scored 100 percentage control.The percentage reduction in weight was found to be 31.25%, 28.75% and. 20% in tap-water, phostoxin and methyl-bromide respectively at the end of four months storage period.
