Effect of Seed Source on Seed Vigour and Field Performance of Sorghum

A set of laboratory tests and a field experiment were conducted during 2009 to investigate the effect of seed source on seed quality attributes of sorghum cultivar Tabat. Simple correlation coefficients were also conducted to determine the degree of association between the different vigour tests and seedling emergence under field conditions. Seeds were obtained from four different locations, viz; two rain-fed locations (Damazin and Habella) and two irrigated locations (Khashm El Girba and El Gezira). Data were collected on initial seed moisture content, 1000-seed weight, germination percentage, rate of germination, seedling shoot length, seedling root length, seedling shoot to root length ratio, seedling fresh weight, seedling dry weight, plant height, number of leaves per plant, leaf area per plant, plant fresh weight and plant dry weight. The results indicated that seed source had significant effect on seedling root length, fresh weight, seed moisture content and 1000-seed weight under laboratory conditions; while significant differences were found in seedling shoot length and plant height under field conditions. In this respect, seeds from Habella (rain-fed area) performed well with regard to germination percentage, rate of germination and field seedling emergence. Also, seeds from rain-fed areas (Habella and Damazin) produced taller plants than these from irrigated areas (Khashm El Girba and El Gezira). The results also showed that field seedling emergence was positively correlated with the estimate, under laboratory condition, of germination percentage (r=0.66), rate of germination (r=0.85), seedling shoot length (r=0.81) and shoot/root length ratio (r=0.51), while it was negatively correlated with dry weight (r= -0.99
