- Hepatitis Cvirus (HCV) is a major public health problem. A cross-sectional study was carried out overa period of2months, from 21 March to 21 May 2015.It deals with 202 samples of blood taken on 102 multi transfused patients and 100 blood donors as controls who have never been transfused. Third generation ELISA was used to detect anti-HCV antibodies. The overall prevalence of anti-HCV antibodies in both groups was 5.9%, 12 of 202 patients. Withinthe group of multitransfused, this prevalence was 10.8%, against 1.0% in the control group. HCV prevalence in multi transfused population was10 times higher than among blood donors (10.8% vs 1.0%, p = 0.003).The prevalence of HCV among males was 2 times higher than in females with 15.8% against 7.8%, but this difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.2).Depending on the pathology, the study demonstrated a high prevalence of HCV in sera taken from patients suffering from hemopathy. Leukemia patients have an HVC prevalence of 33.3%, followed by beta-thalassemic patients18.2%.Divorced had a prevalence of 50.0%, five times higher than that of married persons with 10.3% (p = 0.02).None of the singles participants were found to be seropositive for HCV antibodies. Based on the results of our study, it is clear that the prevalence of serological markers of viral hepatitis C among multi transfused patients is rather worrying. Given the high prevalence of hepatitis C in this high-risk population, it is estimated that preventive measures are needed to reduce this transmission.
