Effect of Seed Rate and NPK Fertilization on Growth, Yield and Forage Quality of Rhodes Grass (Chloris gayana L. kunth.).

A field experiment was conducted for one season (2006/2007) at theDemonstration Farm of the Faculty of Agriculture, University ofKhartoum, Shambat, Sudan, to investigate the effect of seed rate andNPK fertilization on growth, yield and quality of Rhodes grass forage(Chloris gayana L. Kunth) cv. Finecut. The treatment consisted of threedifferent seed rates (5, 10 and 15 kg/ ha) and three NPK fertilizer levels(0, 120 and 240 kg/ha). NPK fertilizer compound N17 P17 K17. Theexperiment was laid out in a Factorial Complete Randomize BlockDesign with four replications.The results showed that seed rate significantly increased plantdensity, leaf area index and forage fresh and dry yield. There were nosignificant effect on the others growth parameters.NPK fertilization has significant effect on plant density andsignificantly increased leaf number per plant and forage fresh and dryyield. NPK had no significant effect on other vegetative growthparameters measured, but uses of the fertilizer lead to slightly increase onplant fresh and dry weights and leaf area index.Neither seed rate nor NPK fertilization significantly affected crudeprotein and fiber content of leaves and stems of Rhodes grass, but theincrease in seed rate and fertilizer levels slightly increased crude proteinand decreased fiber percentage. Seed rate ×NPK fertilization interactionshowed significant effect on crude protein and crude fiber. The highestprotein percentage obtained under SDR2 with highest fertilization level(F2), and lowest value obtained under SDR1 with (F1) fertilization andSDR1 under control of fertilizer treatment. Regarding crude fiber, highestvalue obtained under SDR2 with F1 and SDR3 under control treatmentsof fertilization (F0).
