- Fraxinus angustifolia(Oleaceae) is one of the plants used in traditional medicine in the treatment of various pathologies. The genotoxic effects of ethanolicextracts of Fraxinus angustifoliawere studied in a bacterial test system, Ames test on the strain E.coli WP2 (pKM101). Genotoxicity induced by methyl methane sulfonate and 2-aminofluorene in absence and in the presence of metabolic activation (S9) respectively has been evaluated. It has been observed that MMS and 2 -AF have very significant mutagenic power (P * < 0.0001), however the different concentrations of both extracts showed no mutagenic activity in the presence and absence of S9.This study reveals that the bark extract with the direct mutagenic MMS S9 has a significant antimutagenic effect (P * < 0.01), and the extract of the leaves with the indirect mutagenic 2 -AF has a significant antimutagenic potential (P * < 0.01) with S9, therefore the antimutagenic effect depends on the metabolic activation and extracts tested, but theirmechanism of action remais unknown
