Effects of Intra-row Plant Spacing and Time of Weeding on Growth and Yield of Faba Bean (Vicia faba L.)

الملخص

Faba bean is the fourth most important pulse crops in the world. It is one of the most important food legumes in the Sudan .It plays a role in the fixation of atmospheric nitrogen. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of intra-row plant spacing (10cm and 20 cm) and time of weeding (3, 6, 6 weeks + herbicide after planting) plus control (no weeding) on growth and yield of faba bean. The experiment was conducted for two consecutive seasons (2009/10) and (2010/11) at the experimental farm of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, University of Gezira. A randomized complete block design with three replicates was used. The results showed that intra-row spacing had no significant effect on plant height, 100 seed weight and yield of faba bean, while it had a significant (P ≤ 0.05) effect on number of plants/m2, number of pods/plant and number of weeds/m2. Time of weeding had highly significant (P ≤ 0.01) effects on plant height, number of plant/m2, number of pods/plant, number of weeds/m2 and yield of faba bean. The highest yield (880.2 and 1179.3 kg/ha.) was obtained when weeding after 6 weeks + herbicide and after 6 weeks were practiced during the first and second seasons, respectively. The interaction between plant spacing and time of weeding had a significant effect on plant height in the first season only, whereas it had no significant effect on the other parameters. However, the highest yield (1269.6 kg/ha.) was obtained when weeding after 6 weeks coupled with narrow (10 cm) intra-row spacing. Based on these results in order to obtain high yield of faba bean, weeding after the first 6 weeks (one weeding) coupled with spacing of 10cm between plants is recommended.
