The immune chromatographic test (ICT) is a rapid chromatographic immunoassay for the qualitative detection of antibodies or antigens in whole blood, serum and plasma. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) is qualitative or quantitative technique use for detection of antibodies or antigens in human serum or plasma. ELISA and ICT techniques are intended for screening blood donors and diagnosing patients related to infection with hepatitis C virus which is an infectious disease affecting primarily the liver, caused by the hepatitis C virus (HCV). The aim of this study was to compare between ELISA and ICT methods in detecting hepatitis C Virus. Comparison study was carried out in 160 samples from 160 blood donors at National public health laboratory in Khartoum State, blood bank ,during February 2014. The study clearly showed that, there were 149 (93.1%) negative samples and 11(6.9%) positive samples by ICT and 153 (95.6 %( negative samples and 7 (4.4%) positive samples by ELISA. The 149 Negative samples obtained by ICT gave one positive sample after retested by ELISA, and the 11 positive samples obtained by ICT gave six positive samples and five Negative samples after retested by ELISA. Thus the ICT gave 5 false positive samples and one false negative sample compared to ELISA .The study recommend to use ICT in screening of hepatitis C but not for confirm diagnosis of hepatitis C and screening in blood banks. Also to use ELISA in blood banks to avoid any probability of false blood transfusion.
