- Aerobic bacterial strains, isolated from a soil contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons(region of Hassi-Messaoud, south of Algeria), were used for the degradation of crude oil and naphthalene. Also, the production, characterization and application of biosurfactants were also studied. 1) The results of the degradation of crude oil showed that:(a) Mesophilic strains could grow on crude oil at concentrations up to15% (v/v), (b) The strain 1E (incubated at 30°C)tolerated a wide range of salinity from 0 to80 g.l-1NaCl. (c) We noticed a complete degradation of the 17 studied hydrocarbons (95 to100%) with strains 7A and7J (thermotolerant). (d) The strains1E and7J synthe sized surfactants, and they changed their cell surface to increase the adhesion rate of the oil droplets. 2) Optimal conditions for naphtalene degradation under static conditions (without agitation) with thermotolerant strain, K1C (incubation at 45°C) are: optimal concentration is 500g.l-1,pH=7 and salinity of 2%. The degradation rate exceeded 95% after 6 days of incubation. We noticed that surfactant addition did not improve the degradation of naphthalene.3) The results obtained for the production, the characterization and the environmental application of biosurfactant produced by strain1Eshowed that:(a)The produced quantity of1E biosurfactant was2.1g.l-1, (b) The olive oil presented the optimal carbon source for (25.8mN.m-1), (c)Good thermal ant chamical stabilities. Also, 1E biosurfactant had an antibacterial activity against pathogenic strains, (d) It is a good solubilisant of PAH, finally, it had great potential for remobilization of hydrocarbons. Indeed, the rate of remobilization is 1.3 times higher than that obtained with the chemical surfactant Tween 80
