- This work involves developing hydrogen gas sensors based on silicon and porous silicon. A comparative study was carried out on two sensor structures: bulk silicon covered by a palladium layer (Pd / Si) and a catalytic layer of palladium deposited on porous silicon stabilized by a protective layer of CHx (Pd/CHx / PSi / Si).Infrared spectroscopic analysis (FTIR) and SEM observation confirmed the effectiveness of the functionalization of each development step. Comparison of the detection performance of the three sensors revealed that the deposited layer of Pd has significantly improved the sensitivity of the sensor and its response time in the detection of hydrogen, in particular for an optimum thickness of 10nm.A parallel study by an ab-initio theoretical approach based on the pseudo-potential and plane wave (PP-PW) method in the framework of the periodic density functional theory (DFT) was conducted to understand the effect of porosity and pore size on the structural, electronic and vibrational properties of porous silicon in the presence of hydrogen. The supercell model is used to create porosities of 3.12, 15.62, 28.12 and 40.62%.A comparison of the formation energies of the different porosities allowed us to conclude that the 40.62% porosity is the most favorable. Our calculations showed that the four porosities studied have a direct gap unlike bulk silicon. A comparison of the IR absorbance spectrum obtained by the DFT for a porosity of 40.62% shows good agreement with that measured in experimental part and those published in the literature.
