- Translation is a kind of activity which inevitably involves at least two languages and two cultural traditions”. (Toury, 1978: 200). As this statement implies translation is a method of communicating across linguistic and cultural barriers, and translators are permanently faced with the problem of how to treat the cultural aspects implicit in a source text (ST) and of finding the most appropriate technique of successfully conveying these aspects in the target language (TL). All this is part of the translator’s main aim of bringing the original message over to the target language receptor. The linguistic and cultural factors in translation are so interdependent that the one always implies the other. The translator renders into another language what the words in the original message mean in their culture, the cultural specifics influence the way the language units are used and understood. Culture finds its expression in the language and through the language. Thus, Translation from language to language is ipso facto translation from culture to culture. Through this research we were concerned with the cultural aspect in translating Chinua Achebe’s “Things Fall Apart” from English into Arabic by Samir Ezzat Nassar. The novel is set in the 1890s and portrays the clash between Nigeria’s white colonial government and the traditional culture of the 210indigenous Igbo people. Tired of reading white men’s accounts of how primitive, socially backward and, most important, language-less native Africans were, Achebe sought to convey a fuller understanding of the Igbo culture and give voice to an underrepresented and exploited colonial subject. Published in1958, the novel was an immediate success becoming the most widely read novel in African literature. The study aims at exploring the strategies that have been employed by the translator Sameer Nassar (2002) in transferring culture-specific references. It starts with a historical overview of African literature and its specificities; then, brings to light basically the problems posed by the translation of cultural aspects, and the strategies and approaches employed by translators to handle the cultural load of a text. We chose Achebe’s novel “Things Fall Apart” as a case study for our analysis considering that literary works strengthen the link between linguistic elements and the cultural context they belong to. The main task of the translator is therefore to create a bridge between two different cultures, and to present a fluent text that enables the target reader to have the same reaction that the source reader gets from the original. He (Sameer Nassar) is confronted with a mass of information about the Igbo’s tradition that the author presents, and his decisions and choices are greatly dependent on the type of text being translated and the author’s aims. It should be noted here that this novel belongs to post colonial African literature and its writer aims at acquainting the audience of the original wit foreign cultural values, and his decision to write in English is an important one for he wanted his novel to respond to earlier colonial accounts of Africa. He wanted to achieve cultural revitalization within and through English. He manages, nevertheless, to capture the rhythm of the Igbo language and he integrates Igbo vocabulary into the narrative using English language as a writing medium and employing various writing techniques to convey and express African sociocultural reality. The Or, to eliminate cultural differences by recreating the source text in a fluent flowing manner in the target language which does not contain references or ideas which are unfamiliar or incomprehensible in the target language culture in a domesticating approach which aims at complete naturalness of expression and tries to relate the receptor to modes of behavior relevant within the context of his own culture. main objective of this study is investigating the procedures and methods applied to transfer cultural aspects and references from English into Arabic through analyzing a number of examples extracted from the corpus in the light of the different factors that affect the decisions made by the translator regarding the strategies to be employed. The latter include either foreignisation or domestication; i.e., either to emphasize the presence of the foreign in the target text in order to render a more faithful version of the original in the target language, although this may require some of the norms of the target language to be broken. Thus, the readers of the target text are encouraged to pay more attention to the text as it deliberately breaks linguistic and cultural conventions in the target language in order to communicate the true flavor of the source text. “A ... translation of this type is designed to permit the reader to identify himself as fully as possible with a person in the source language context, and to understand as much as he can of the customs, manner of thought, and means of expression.” (Nida in Venuti, 2000: 129).
