The Use of Cohesive Devices in the Writing of English Majors at Tishreen University: A Textual Analysis

الملخص

This study aims to explore the manner in which cohesive devices are used by third-year English majors at Tishreen University, Latakia, Syria. It identifies the type of cohesion used according to Halliday and Hasan’s (1976) frameworkby analyzing forty randomlysampledessays. The enquiry is mainly motivated not only for determining the most frequent cohesive devices the students use with regard to the writing genre involved, but also for detecting the problems they face while doing so. This study advances our understanding of cohesion as it has successfully integrated the analysis of cohesion within a frameworkthat included other factors, such as lexicogrammatical competence and coherence, under the scope of analysis. The lexicogrammatical competence of the students was determined while the coherence quality of their essays was independently evaluated by three referees who had considerable experience in the field of EFL written composition. The findings of the study suggest that lexical cohesion is the most frequently used type of cohesion in the students’ essays, and it also illustrates a relationship between the distance of the cohesive devices and coherence. A number of problems in the use of cohesive devices has been identified. Contrary to what was hypothesized in this research, the results of the study have shown no significant relationship between cohesionand lexicogrammar while it has detected a highly significant one between cohesion and coherence, on the one hand, and coherence and lexicogrammar, on the other. Thestudy provides further insights into the way in which cohesive devices are dealt with by composition instructors; and consequently, offers applicable remedial procedures they can resort to in order to overcome some major obstacles.
