Transgenerational Trauma among Palestinian Refugees in Gaza- Communication Methods- Mental Health and Coping Strategies

Transgenerational trauma refers to the transmission of trauma from one generation to the next. The purpose of this study is to explore how the individual and collective trauma has been handed down across three generations in a Palestinian refugee community whose members have been enduring precarious conditions since they were exiled from their original cities. Moreover, this research examines the psychological consequences of the historical trauma, and the coping strategies utilized by each generation. The study used a qualitative approach and was conducted through semi-structured interviewing utilizing purposive sampling. Ten participants from three different generations were recruited through the help of community members in the Gaza Strip. Thematic analysis was carried out to identify common themes in the accounts provided by the interviewees. The findings revealed multiple shared subthemes among participants from the three generations that were clustered into four domains: recollections of AlNakba and related narratives (aggression and brutality, temporariness of forced displacement, harsh living conditions following displacement, disintegration of family networks, historical facts and power imbalance), emotional reactions (fear, disappointment, helplessness, despair, anger, and nostalgia), adaptive responses derived from eschatological hope (resistance, perseverance, and faith in return), and narrative transmission and its significance. Additionally, the continuity of struggle, including the consequences of blockade, political division, and repeated wars/aggressions, was identified as an additional domain among second and third generation participants. These themes provide insights into the social suffering of Palestinians living in the Gaza Strip, which extends beyond the individual struggle.
