Three experiments were conducted to find out the possibility of formulating technically modified diets to be used for feeding newly hatched chicks, as early as possible, in the hatchery, and during the transportation to the poultry farms.Experiment 1: This experiment was carried out using 120 chicks of a commercial broiler breed and hatched in a hatchery near by the experiment site. The chicks were collected at the beginning of the hatching procedure, in order to obtain chicks hatched at the same time. These chicks were distributed into 4 groups, each one was further divided into 6 subgroups, to obtain 6 replicates of 5 chicks each. The chicks were fed different diets:1.Chicks of the first group (control) were fed a diet covering all their nutritional requirements. 2.Chicks of the second group were fed a diet containing 5% starch. 3.Chicks of the third group were fed a diet containing 5% (gelatin of plant origin).4.Chicks of the fourth groups were fed a diet containing 2.5% starch and 2.5% . All these diets were equal in their nutritional values. All chicks were fed ad- tell the end of the experiment which lasted at the age of 7 days. The results demonstrated that adding 5% starch to the diet, increased the apparent energy (AME) and the true energy (TME) of this diet, compared to the diet containing 5% . This increase in energy, significantly (P <0.01), improved the live body weight (LBW) of the chicks fed on this diet up to 7 days of age. In addition, the feed conversion ratio (FCR) was also improved. It was also noticed that the diet containing 2.5% starch and 2.5% improved production performance (LBW and FCR) of the chicks fed on this diet. There were no changes observed on different parts of the digestive tract (length of different parts of the small intestine and weight of the gizzard, true stomach or liver) of chicks fed the different diets. -8-Experiment 2: In this experiment, the 2 diets which improved the production performance (AME, TME, LBW and FCR) in the first trial, the diet containing 5% starch and that containing 2.5% starch and 2.5% , were technically modified. Hot water at 90 ْْC was added, with steering, to these diets at 2 levels, 25% and 50%. In such a way 4 technically modified diets were obtained:1.Diet containing 5% starch and 25% water.2.Diet containing 5% starch and 50% water.3.Diet containing 2.5% starch and 2.5 and 25% water.4.Diet containing 2.5% starch and 2.5 and 50% water.Six sample replicates of 25 g from each diet were taken, and each sample was put in a small sterilized plastic box of 100 ml. These samples were conserved in an incubator at 38 ْْC for a period of 1, 3 or 7 days. This temperature matches that of the hatching machine found in the hatchery. Six other sample replicates from each diet were conserved in a refrigerator at 4 ْْC, and also for 1, 3 or 7 days. Samples of the 4 diets were, after the conservation periods, tested for humidity percentage and bacterial count. The results showed that, the best diet which conserved the highest humidity percentage and the least bacterial count was that which contained 2.5% starch, 2.5% 50% water, when conserved in refrigerator at 4 ْْC.Experiment 3:Depending on results of the , a third experiment was designed and conducted to test the technically modified diet which was selected in the . In this trial 240 broiler chicks were used and distributed into 4 60 chicks each. The 4 groups of chicks were differently treated:1.Chicks of group 1 were fed a basal diet without any treatment (control), immediately after hatching. Drinking water was also offered at the same time. 2.Chicks of group 2 were starved hours without any feed but, drinking water was, in all time, available. 3.Chicks of group 3 were fed the same basal diet used for chicks of the immediately after hatching, but without drinking water for 24 hours. 4.Chicks of group 4 were fed the technically modified diet containing 2.5% starch, 2.5% and 50% water for 24 hours. -9-After 24 hours of hatching and early feeding treatments, all the groups of chicks were sent from the hatchery to the experiment site and fed on a commercial broiler diet. The results of this experiment demonstrated that feeding chicks in the hatchery on the technically modified diet, immediately after hatching, improved production performance (LBW and FCR), compared with control chicks which fed the basal diet, with access to drinking water. Furthermore, these 2 above mentioned diets, significantly (P<0.01) improved LBW, compared to all other early feeding treatments at the age of 1 or 7 days. These 2 diets also improved FCR at the end of the trial which 42 day.The technically modified diet also improved intestinal micro flora counts. It was concluded from the results of these 3 experiments, the possibility of formulating technically modified diets designated to feed broiler chicks immediately after hatching to cover their nutritional needs. Such diets could also improve the final production performance of broilers, such as LBW and FCR
