- Literature, like art more generally, has always been concerned with aspects of what can be called the unconscious or (not me) or other: it is and has always been centrally concerned with dreams and fantasy, hallucination and visions, madness, trace, and other kinds of impersonality or absence of self. Iraqi poetry of the seventies is concerned with exploring, deflating, and transforming our understanding of the question, who do we think we are? In phenomenology, the Other is a constituting factor in the self-image that a subject builds up. The other is the perceiving, conscious, meaning-conferring other person who helps or forces the conscious subject to define his own world picture and his own view of his place in it. Knowledge, as defined in phenomenological description, is thus precisely not solipsism, as is often averred, but precisely the opposite. Knowledge is a world-picture built up partly through the instrumentality of other people in the world in intersubjectivity, and is thus a social, socializing, and socialized process through and through. The other socializes and intersubjectivizes perception because of the fact of embodiment. In the broadest sense, a text is something that has been made or constructed—a novel, a poem, a movie—which implies that there are other things in the world (being, justice, truth, and so on) which haven’t been made but just are. According to this view, everything in the world belongs either on the side of representation (text) or presence (the real). Derrida speaks of a text in the standard sense, but with a twist. Derrida’s (text) carries the sense of something that has been made—and that’s all. In other words, it does not carry the inference that (outside) the text, things just are. What he calls (text), Derrida explains, implies all the structures called real, economic, historical, socio-institutional—in short, all possible references. While these references have their singularities, nonetheless they are not in themselves outside the text: at the very least, the values and meanings that might be attributed to them are open to interpretation according to the many possible contexts in which those interpretations could be made. Iraqi poetry of the seventies has been sensitive to the role of otherness and aware of what might be described as our obligation in relation to otherness. This dissertation aims to tackle the discourse of the Other in Iraqi poetry of the seventies generation. It consists of four chapters, a conclusion, and an introduction. The dissertation adopts in its investigation modern linguistic approaches, reception theory, hermeneutic semiology, and hermeneutic phenomenology. The dissertation chapters are as follows: The first chapter: Definitions, concepts, and transcendence; it consists of three sections: A. Discourse term definition, communicative competence, and intentional function. B. The Other in the light of main principles: time, consciousness, reality, and the linguistic other. C. The poetical generation in Iraq, and the classification mechanism. The second chapter: The miracolous discourse and the Other; it consists of three sections: A. The word and its impact on the Other. B. Pun on words. C. The Quranic narration and its impact on the formation of the Other. The third chapter: Hermeneutic semiology; it consists of two sections: A. The myth function in the discourse of the Other. B. The hermeneutic cultural discourse in the light of tradition and entitlements. The fourth chapter: Hermeneutic phenomenological discourse; it consists of three sections: A. Dream and its function in the discourse of the Other. B. Childhood and remembering echoes. C. Mirror and self-challenge.
