Effect of Intravenous Lignocaine and Epidural Analgesia On Post-operative Pain, Paralytic Ileus and Hospital Stay in Gynecological Patients

الملخص

Post-operative paralytic ileus is a serious concern among surgicalpatients. This study was done among ninety six Sudanese patientsundergoing gynaecological operations (hysterectomies and myomectomies)in Soba University Hospital (SUH) in the period from the 1st of April 2003to the 30th of October 2003.All patients were of ASA grade I & II within the age group 20-65 years.The study was done on three groups of patients:The first was the control group; number of patients was thirty three.The second was the lignocaine group; number of patients was thirty three.The third was the epidural group; number of patients was thirty.In this study, the beneficial effects of the lignocaine intravenously, givenwith induction, continued peri-operatively and stopped 60 min after closureof skin (in the second group), and epidural anaesthesia and analgesia usingbupivacaine (in the third group), were examined on the post-operative bowelfunction, adequacy of analgesia and duration of hospital stay.Data was collected using a questionnaire.It was found that both lignocaine treated patients and epidural patientshad faster return of bowel function, less pain and shorter hospital stay incomparison with the control patients.
