الملخص
University students encounter problems in of words because of phonological mistakes. Unless they have dealt with these words in the written form and been given the semantic context, they wouldn‟t have known the meaning implied. Other factors affect meaning comprehension, such as homophones, mispronunciation, pauses during a conversation, intonation; all create ambiguity in meaning. My research attempts to investigate behind this problem. This study has been conducted at Al-Baath University in on undergraduate students from different levels in the English Department in order to detect their phonological errors resulting in semantic ambiguity. The number of participants in this study is 30 male and female students. Different methods of data collection have been adopted in this study including a test and a questionnaire. The findings of the study reveal that Syrian speakers of English have difficulties in understanding English words are similar to other words in pronunciation such as homophones. Finally, this study presents effective suggestions for teachers as well as for university students providing them with workable drills and useful techniques.
