Association between Domestic Violence and Signs of Depression among Women Attending Primary Health Care Centers in AL-Hilla City

Violence against women is a series of forced, psychological, physical or sexual acts against women, which pose a danger to women's mental health, such as depression and suicide attempt, as well as maternal and neonatal health problems.Objectives:1)To identify the type of domestic violence against women ; 2) To assess the depressive symptoms among women experienced domestic violence; 3)To find out the association between symptom of depression and domestic violence.Methodology:This wasa cross-sectional study design . This study included a convenience sample of (300) women who attended for randomized selected primary health care centers in AL-Hilla city. Data were collected using pretested questionnaire to verify the association between violence against women and signs of depression and other correlates.Results:Findings indicated that the higher value of the study sample(18.3%) aged between 23 to 27 years , (52.0%) were married and also shows that (21.3%) of the women had primary levels of education,Regarding to their residency,(79.0%) of the study sample were living in urban areas,The majority (63.3%) were house wives and (66.7%) of them had low family income. The study revealed that (56.7%) exposed to domestic Violence by their husbands. And shows that higher value of the study sample(62.0%) reported that they were exposed sometimes to different types of violence, majority of participants(68.7%)had moderate level of depression and there was a significant associated(p<=0.05)between a types of domestic violence against women and signs of depression especially among single women. Abstract Conclusion: Most of the women in study subjects (56.7%) were exposed to domestic Violence by their husbands,and the psychological violence is the commonest type ,(68.7%)of study participants had moderate level of depressive symptoms and the single women are more vulnerable to depressive symptom than other groups.Recommendations:Intensify efforts to educate families about the problem of violence and its various impact the family and society through seminars and meetings And publications for the guidance and use of various media, Social, intellectual, cultural and legal awareness of family violence by religious leaders and governmental and non-governmental organizations to prevent and consider violence as a collective responsibility by raising awareness and spreading tolerance and respect for each other and dealing with women as an active member of society, Review laws, regulations and legislation relating to women's rights to prevent the practice Violence against them, Further researches on the problem of domestic violence against women in Iraq's provinces to find out its forms and disadvantages so that they can be confronted, followed by analytic cohort and interventional studies, Paying attention to the social upbringing of children and raising parents' awareness of the danger of using violence on children and solve marital problems through understanding and dialogue
