الملخص
The body needs oxygen to survive(1). Oxygen is the mostabundant element in the body (in terms of mass, not number ofatoms), the preponderance of water accounts for the large mass ofoxygen in humans(2). Oxygen as our primary source of energy isthe fuel required for the proper operation for all body system(3).Maintaining proper oxygen levels in the body is a vital ingredientto health, vitality, physical stamina and endurance(3). 97% of allthe O2 normally carried from the lungs to the tissues is carried inchemical combination with hemoglobin in the red blood cells(2,4).The oxygen reserve of the body amounts to less than 1400 ml. Itconsists mainly of that oxygen with in the lungs and bound tohemoglobin. If the air ways are blocked, adequate oxygen tensionfor basal cellular respiration can be maintained for only 2 to 4minutes. If arterial blood supply to a tissue is occluded, oxygen isavailable for only 10 to 15 seconds.
