الملخص

Brucellosis is the most common bacterial zoonosis world-wide, with more than500,000 estimated new human cases each year, but the actual number of cases, including undetected and unreported cases, is believed to be considerably higher due to the non-specific clinical picture of human brucellosis, low awareness of the disease in non-endemic countries and shortcomings in laboratory diagnosis.Theobjective of this research work was to evaluate the prevalence of brucellosis among Abattoir Workers and Livestock presented for slaughter in Al Hayer Abattoir, Al Ain City, Abu Dhabi Emirate, U.A.E.A cross-sectional survey for the prevalence of brucellosis was carried from November 2014 to January 2015 with systematic random samplingof 384 animalspresented for slaughter and 11 human subjects comprising the workforce at the abattoir. Rose Bengal Plate Test and the standard (Serum) Agglutination Test were used to analyze blood samples for Brucella antibodies in animals and humans respectively..The resultsofthe study indicated that the prevalence of brucellosis was (0.3%) among slaughtered animals and (9%) among abattoir workers. The findings of this work indicate that despite of the low prevalence reported among livestock slaughtered at Al Hayer abattoir (0.3%), the seropositivity among slaughterhouse workers remained high (9%), which emphasizes the highly zoonotic potential and occupational nature of the disease in Al Ain region in UAE.In light of these findings, the study recommends the need to unify efforts among various government agencies to control brucellosis among animals which constitute the main source of infection of humans, as well as the need to enforce legislations on occupational health and safety within Al Ain slaughterhouses to curb the spread of disease to the workers. Moreover the study also recommends the necessity of more studies and research about brucellosis among human and animals in UAE.
