Effects of crises on aviation sector and the UAE’s response to overcome the current COVID-19 pandemic and future readiness

The main purpose of this dissertation is to study the effects of crises on aviation sector in general and UAE’s response to deal with the outbreak of COVID-19 in particular. For investigation, the research depended on secondary source of data, as primary sources were scarce due to the lockdown all over the world. In the literature review, different types of crises including health, social, security, economic, political, and natural disasters were studied by the researcher. The study looked at how the world responded to crises, and in particular how global aviation industry has responded to mitigate the COVID-19 crisis. This information on international best practices helped the study to examine which strategies could prove to be useful for the UAE aviation sector. How this industry had experienced some of the past crises and dealt with them according to their nature has also been looked at. The study observes that during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, health, economic and social challenges were not clear initially. As a consequence, the UAE national carriers, like other international airlines, did not have a clear picture on how to prevent the disease from spreading and which precautions to take for their passengers’ safety. As a result, they decided to ground all aircrafts except those which continued delivering food and medical supplies to the world. The study finds that as the pandemic is still continuing until now (November-December 2020), with the second wave of global outbreaks, the evolving strategic move by the UAE’s key airlines, such as Emirates and Etihad, saw good results for business recovery. A SWOT analysis was performed to reflect recommendations from the current situation challenges; both short- and long-term plans were considered.
