الملخص

Natural regeneration of woody plants is an important process in conserving the forest ecosystems of the dryland environment. When the plant succession is concerned, the nature of the plant development from the so juvenile stage to senescence is surely affected by many natural and biological factors. This kind of natural process is not of the same pattern over the whole ecosystems. Therefore, the objective of this study was to describe the nature of the regeneration of Acacia tortilis (Forsk) Hayne in Abujalfa natural forest, in the Gezira State, in central Sudan. A regeneration survey was conducted on the onset of the rainy season of the year 2015. At the beginning, a satellite image was taken for the forest in order to determine its boundaries and plant cover distribution. According to the image analysis, stratified sampling was used in the regeneration survey. The forest, 11499 feddans in area, was divided into two compartments; one was of high density distribution, while the other of low density distribution. The line that separated the two compartments was taken as base line for sampling of both compartments. Seven survey lines were radiated striate at right angle from the base line into each compartment. The distance between each survey line and the other was one kilometer. A circular sample plots were laid along the survey lines at distance of 500 meter from each. The number of sample plots was 67 in the compartment of high density and 30 in that of the low density. In each sample plot, the diameter at ground level and the height of each plant were measured. The results revealed that the tree growth at the compartment of high density was composed of 56% trees, 27% shrubs and 17% seedlings, and the height ranged between 0.2 to 5 meters. Whereas in the compartment of low density the tree growth was 59% trees, 16% shrubs and 25% seedlings and the height ranged between 0.13 to 4.5 meters. The distribution of those growth stages was not homogenous over all the forest, it varied from plot to another, but the variation was not significant. In despite of the situation that the forest is opened to free grazing and browsing, the results were inferred to a conclusion that, there was a continuum natural regeneration in the forest without any augmented human intervention. The study recommends a silvicultural intervention to enrich the forest stocking density.
