The importance of optical systems at the present time comes from the fact that they have become widely applied in many fields (astronomical, medical, military, etc.). Therefore, scientific research has increased to find the optimal design of optical systems and evaluate their performance. During the twentieth century, this evaluation traditionally depended on developed optical criteria such as the Point Spread Function (PSF) or the Modulation Transfer Function (MTF), which result from numerical analysis of the optical design. These provide a complete and objective evaluation of image quality in terms of contrast and resolution at all spatial frequencies. Hence, this method can be a useful tool for monitoring quantitative optical production. The idea of this research is to design and develop a local optical platform (compact) to measure the modulation transfer function of optical systems within a short time (ten minutes), with the possibility of being used by an ordinary operator. The results of this work can be summarized as follows: Research into methods of measuring the modulation transfer function (line scan, edge scan, square bar grid, sine bar grid) has been carried out, and the best method that provides more accurate and realistic values was selected. A study of the effect of slit width in line scan measurements has also been performed. A Collimator and object generator block were designed and practically tested. A suitable CCD sensor was selected for measurement, and the effect of pixel width on modulation transfer function measurement of optical systems was investigated. An algorithm was developed and implemented using Delphi programming language to calculate and plot the modulation transfer function. A compact, portable platform for measuring the modulation transfer function was designed and manufactured, which can be easily used by optical measuring and adjustment workshops. The platform was assembled and finely adjusted, and practical experiments were carried out on several optical systems. The results were compared with theoretical values from optical design software (Zemax) and practical results from the SIRA device and interferometer. The developed platform gave more accurate results with a relative error not exceeding 3%. Measurement uncertainties were calculated, and an analytical study of the effect of tilt and decenter errors, resulting from the optical manufacturing process, on the modulation transfer function calculation was conducted.
