الملخص
A field experiment was conducted for two consecutive seasons (2005/06-2006/07) in the Demonstration Farm of the Faculty of Agriculture atShambat to study the effect of seed source and cultivar on theperformance of Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor {L.} Moench) plant underirrigation. Seeds were obtained from four different locations, viz; two rainfed locations (Damazin and Gadareif) and two irrigated locations(Khashm el Girba and Sinnar). The varieties used were two improvedvarieties (Tabat and Wad Ahmed) and two local cultivars (ArfaaGadamak and Zahrat elgadambalia).Parameters studied include: growth attributes (plant height, number ofleaves and leaves area per plant, number of internodes/plant, internodelength and number of tillers per plant), phonological attributes (pedunclelength, number of days to 50% flowering and number of days to 95%maturity) and yield attributes (number of plant /m², number ofheads/plant, number of seeds/head, seeds weight/head, 1000-seeds weightand grain yield). The results indicated that, among the measured attributes, seed source hadonly significant effects on mean plant height, number of leaves/plant,number of tillers/plant, peduncle length, number of heads per plant, number of seeds per head and grain yield. The highest grain yield wasobtained from seeds produced in rain-fed location (8.4 tones/ha)compared to irrigated location (7.0 tones/ha). The high yield of the rainfedlocation was associated with greater number of heads per plant andnumber of seeds per head. Irrespective of the seed source, the improvedcultivars (Tabat and Wad Ahmed) out yielded the local ones (Arfaagadamak and Zahrat el Gadamballia) in most of the parameters measuredin this study. In this respect, the improved cultivars were significantlytaller, had greater number of seeds/head and greater yield compared to thelocal cultivars. In contrast, the local cultivars were earlier compared to theimproved ones. It is apparent, however, that sorghum seeds obtained fromdiverse environments can be grown provided that suitable cultivars areselected according to the prevailing environmental conditions.
