الملخص

An exile’s journey does not entail going on a willful voyage into discovery, but a wallowing trial of despair and nostalgia. The exile’s ability to think and prosper is limited as opportunities in returning home disappear, inflicting scars, eliminating the hope that can sustain them throughout their journey into unfamiliar lands, and fragmenting their identities into shattered unhealable mirrors. Salman Rushdie, Segun Afolabi, Edward Said, Atiq Rahimi, and Julia Kristeva, among others, have dealt with exile either by defining terms, by writing about their personal experience regarding it, or by describing how it has an effect on the person undergoing it physically and psychologically. Atiq Rahimi, in his novel A Thousand Rooms of Dream and Fear, shows more than one form of exile. He places his protagonist, Farhad, in a war zone and shows the psychological effect of exile before actually sending him into exile. The psychological effect of exile is shown on Farhad as he undergoes a series of events—from one labyrinthine path into another—that leave him helpless and reminiscing about his family and his past, changing into actual fright and physical exile when he is forced out of the country and into abjection. My claim is that exile is a multi-faceted concept and experience that makes the person more predisposed to external as well as internal influences. These influences can be the results of political wars and disputes and also of self-alienation from society. One or both of these issues may take the role of initiators in the fragmentation of the self, especially in Rahimi’s novel. Exile in this particular tale is told by the author in the form of a narrative inviting the reader to think of exile and, subsequently, to problematize the issue in a variety of ways.
