Reference to Weaponry in the Mass media: a study in the loss incurred in translating the terminology of military discourse

الملخص

This study aims at finding the losses incurred in translating media terminologies in Arabic and English with regard to weaponry in military discourse. The analysis highlights two categories into discourse analysis: the ideology and the equivalence effect on translation media terminologies. For the purpose of the study, the researcher quoted and analyzed eleven reports from English media, and another seven reports from Arabic. The Arabic media uses the term )دولياالمحرم( meaning (Internationally Forbidden), while the English media uses the term (Internationally Banned) meaning )المحظودوليار(, hence the truthfulness of news is affected. The study concludes that we have two different languages (Arabic and English) with two different cultures which have diverse affect on the used terms in media. The ideological perspectives and the equivalence approach have good effect on the selected terms in both languages, as a result loss in translating media terminologies may occur .The study recommends that translators and terminologists have to exert all of their efforts and co-operate to find such a solution for such problem, which, at least, helps in sending the true information of news and avoids the loss which occurs in translating between Arabic and English.
