Pattern of Preferable reading Materials among Health Professions Students in Four Universities in Khartoum Stat, Sudan(2015)

الملخص

Handouts recently are being overestimated by the students as the only source of knowledge. The aim of this study is to explore the reasons of this phenomenon in the subjects of the basic medical sciences.This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted among 428 2nd year undergraduate students in four universities in Khartoum State, Sudan. Most of the students did not ever started to study from a textbook in two subjects: Embryology and histology, instead, they study these subjects from handouts all the time. As preferable study materials, students preferred handouts in embryology, histology and neuroanatomy, but they preferred textbooks in physiology. Difficulties in studying from textbooks were rated as follows: price of the textbook, understanding English language, handouts were enough to pass the exam and lastly the lack of enough time to study from textbook, the students with Sudanese secondary certificate significantly rated the price of the textbook as the main difficulty for gross anatomy, histology and biochemistry, dentistry students significantly rated English language as the main difficulty in neuroanatomy. Students generally preferred hard copy than electronic version of both handout and textbook.: students prefer handouts over textbooks, we recommend the institutes to provide updated textbooks and to conduct English language extensive courses in the first year, teachers are recommended to publish their own textbooks and to encourage students to study from textbooks by adopting variety of teaching and assessment methods.
