Infant and child mortality are important yardstick of health status. This research study is an attempt to uncover the most important determinants of infant and child mortality in Greater Wad Medani locality. Specifically, the study aimed at determining how family life affects child survival upon focusing on socio-economic, intermediate, cultural and demographic factors. Data were collected from a random sample of 200 women in the reproductive age span 15-49 years in six administrative units representing Wad Medani Metropolitan area (Medani Center, East, North, South, Shabarga and Hantoub). Data were analyzed with the help of the SPSS statistical package for social Sciences. The study mainly utilized descriptive statistics to analyze all variable related to family life that has impacts on infant and child death. The study also utilized cross sectional analysis in analyzing contingency table through Chi-square tests to determine association between the dependent variable (under five mortality) and socio-economic indicators as independent variables. The results showed that differentials in infant and child mortality are associated with parent’s education, especially mother education as a predisposing factor. It was also found that the occupation of father and his ability to improve family standard of living and provision of safe drinking water are associated' with infant and child survival. There are also other important factors affecting child health such as household nutritional, cultural and environmental life, in addition to vaccination, breastfeeding and weaning and sanitation. The study recommended a number of policy directives most important of which is mothers awareness such as vaccination, breastfeeding, food preservice, accesses to clean water and improved sanitation are the major risk factors.
