Knowledge, Attitude and Practice Regarding Diabetic Retinopathy Among Diabetic Patients at El Doroshab Health Center, Khartoum State, Sudan (2018)

الملخص

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) known as diabetic eye disease is a potentially blinding complication of diabetes and is a leading cause of blindness. The study is aKAPstudyregarding diabetic retinopathy among diabetic patients at El Doroshab Health center. It isa descriptive, health center based and cross sectional study of quantitative data. It was conducted from March to June 2018, targeted the diabetic patients presented to the center. The study sample isa simple random sample includes210patient.The patients who are 60 years or more are (42.9%).Females represent (57.1%) of the study subjects. The married patients are (72.4%) and who have secondary school level education are (34.3%). The patients with type 2 DM represent (73.3%),and DM for more than 10 years. Theyhave good knowledge score(71.3%);they know that DM can affect the eyes and cause diabetic retinopathy after several years and DR can cause blindness especially among poorly control diabetics. Therefore, they stated that the diabetic patients should do eye checkup once a year.The study participantshave negative attitude (77.1%)regarding DR; they don’t perform eye checkup when they haven’t eye complain.Additionally, they have negative practices (66.7%); they visited ophthalmic clinic when they had had eye symptoms andabout half of them were diagnosedas mild DR. Only 34.5% of participants have regular eye checkup every year, while 65.5% had irregular eye checkup due to financial problems. In conclusion,this study participantshavegood knowledge about DR which is significantly associated with negative attitude and negative practices patterns. The study recommends education programs for diabetic patients about DRwhich focus on positive attitudes and better practice to prevent blindness due to DR.
