- The aim of this study is to determine cerium (IV) using continuous flow injection and sequential flow injection. The reaction of cerium determination has been carried out via its reaction with potassium iodide (KI) in an acidic medium of sulfuric acid to release iodine. The yellow color of iodine was absorbed at (351 nm). The design of the continuous flow injection unit included a home-made quaternary injection valve having two material loadings: acid and sample, while KI was used as the carrier stream. The optimum conditions of the system such as (KI concentration, acid concentration, pump speed, reaction coil length, acid volume, and sample volume) were studied. The calibration curve under optimum conditions obeyed Beer’s law in the range (1–40 mg/L), with correlation coefficient (r = 0.9984), linearity (R² = 0.9992), and detection limit (0.5 mg/L). The dispersion factor (D) for 10 mg/L and 30 mg/L concentrations was (1.333) and (1.320), respectively. The dead volume of the unit was zero. The interference ions with Ce(IV) were studied using the optimum conditions of the continuous flow injection system. The studied cations were (Al³⁺, K⁺, Na⁺, Cd²⁺, NH₄⁺, Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺, Cu²⁺, Ag⁺, Sn⁴⁺, Bi³⁺), while the anions were (Cl⁻, C₂O₄²⁻, SO₄²⁻, CN⁻, NO₃⁻, MoO₄²⁻, F⁻, IO₄⁻, CrO₄²⁻). Also, glucose and EDTA were tested as interferences. The results showed that Cu²⁺, Sn⁴⁺, Bi³⁺, F⁻, IO₄⁻, and CrO₄²⁻ interfered with Ce(IV), and these interferences were treated using appropriate masking agents. After that, a unit for sequential flow injection was designed for the same reaction and optimization procedure. The calibration curve obeyed Beer’s law in the range (1–40 mg/L), with correlation coefficient (r = 0.9980), linearity (R² = 0.9959), and detection limit (0.5 mg/L). The dispersion factor (D) for 10 mg/L and 30 mg/L concentrations was (1.200) and (1.222), respectively. The method was developed by introducing malachite green dye, which reacts with liberated iodine to form a green-blue complex with λmax at (684 nm). A new valve with three loading capacities was designed, allowing the division of the carrier stream into two parts: one for loading the acid and sample where iodine is released, and the other for loading malachite green dye. The two streams meet to form the complex. The optimum conditions such as (pump speed, second reaction coil length, volume, and concentration of malachite green dye) were studied. The calibration curve obeyed Beer’s law in the range (1–40 mg/L), with correlation coefficient (r = 0.9995), linearity (R² = 0.9990), and detection limit (0.5 mg/L). The dispersion factor (D) for 10 mg/L and 30 mg/L concentrations was (1.145) and (1.152), respectively, and the dead volume was zero. Another sequential flow injection unit using malachite green dye was designed, and the calibration curve obeyed Beer’s law in the range (1–40 mg/L), with correlation coefficient (r = 0.9951), linearity (R² = 0.9902), and detection limit (0.5 mg/L). The dispersion factor (D) for 10 mg/L and 30 mg/L concentrations was (1.118) and (1.130), respectively. The developed units were successfully applied for Ce(IV) determination in different samples such as human hair, soil, aqueous solutions, and tap water, showing high efficiency and sensitivity.
