- In this present work, an analytical model is developed for the analysis of the mechanical behaviour (bending, buckling and free vibration) of beams made of functionally graded materials (FGM) using a simple three-variableparabolic shear deformation theory (PSDT) based on a new displacement field. The proposed theory gives a parabolic description of the transverse shear stress through the thickness of the beam, yet satisfies the condition of zero stresses at the upper and lower edges of the beam. The mechanical properties of the beams are assumed to be varying according to a power-law (P-FGM) and exponential (E-FGM) distribution of the volume fraction of the constituents. Differential equilibrium equations and boundary conditions for FGM beams are derived using Hamilton’s principle. The solutions are obtained using Navier’s approach for the case of simply supported FG beams. The numerical results obtained by this model are compared with other solutions proposed by other theories available in the literature. It can be concluded that the proposed theory is efficient to study the static and dynamic response of plates made of functionally graded materials
