During the period from February 2012 to January 2013, four sites were chosen in Babylon Governorate to study the environmental conditions and the diversity of halophytic vegetation. The first site was in the Fandia region, the second in the Hashimia region, the third in the Suq Ammir region, and the fourth in the Al-Kifil region. Air and soil surface temperatures, dew point, relative humidity, wind speed, and solar radiation intensity were studied monthly. Soil characteristics were studied monthly at three depths: 0–10 cm, 10–20 cm, and 20–30 cm, by determining pH, electrical conductivity (EC), hydrogen ions (H⁺), ammonium (NH₄⁺), sulfates (SO₄²⁻), available phosphorus, chlorides (Cl⁻), sodium (Na⁺), potassium (K⁺), bicarbonates (HCO₃⁻), calcium carbonates (CaCO₃), total organic matter (TOM), cation exchange capacity (CEC), humidity, and texture. The study measured the number of halophytic species, their density, relative frequency, and coverage, as well as abundance index, Shannon–Wiener index, Simpson’s index, and dominance index to assess vegetation diversity. The range of air and soil surface temperatures was between (11.5–41.1) °C and (14.0–43.37) °C, respectively, while the relative humidity ranged between (10.69–83%). Wind speed ranged between (3.97–25.67) km/h, and solar radiation intensity ranged between (277–878.67) W/m². Soils in the studied sites tended to be basic with high salinity, especially in the upper layers, decreasing with depth in all sites. They showed low content of mineral nitrogen, available phosphorus, calcium, and total organic matter, while showing higher concentrations of chlorides, sodium, and sulfates. Potassium concentrations were relatively low. Calcium carbonate ranged between (17.17–66.44)%, and the maximum value of cation exchange capacity (CEC) was (3.39) meq/kg. The study recorded twelve halophytic species belonging to seven families, in addition to Tamarix spp. Some species were found in all sites throughout the study period (Tamarix spp.). Maximum plant density was recorded for Aeluropus littoralis at site (3), while the maximum frequency was for Cressa cretica at site (1). Tamarix spp. showed the highest coverage in all sites. The maximum Shannon–Wiener index value (1.4759) was recorded at site (3), while the lowest Simpson’s index value (0.2693) was also recorded at the same site. Finally, May was the month with the greatest diversity of halophytic plants, and the halophytic vegetation in the governorate was unstable.
