الملخص

In Sudan, the national average grain yield of sorghum is about 600 kg/ha which is very low compared to the world average of production. The low productivity is due to many constraints. The most important constrain is lack of high yielding cultivars. The current experiment was conducted for two seasons (2015-2016) at Gezira Research Station, Wad Medani, Sudan, to study genetic variability, heritability and character association of some grain yield and its component of 10 sorghum genotypes, comprised three released varieties as a standard check and seven advanced early and late maturing sorghum genotypes introduced by the Nile Sun Seed Company, Sudan. The design was a randomized complete block design with three replicates. The characters measured were days to 50% flowering, plant height (cm), panicle length (cm), panicle weight (kg), 100 grain weight (g) and grain yield (kg/ha). Significant differences were observed among the genotypes for all the characters studied except panicle weight. The combined analysis showed that genotypes × seasons interaction was significant for all characters studied except panicle weight. The characters that showed high heritability were days to 50% flowering, plant height and panicle length. Grain yield was positively correlated with panicle length and 100 grain weight and negatively correlated with plant height and panicle weight while significantly and negatively correlated with days to 50% flowering. The path coefficient analysis indicated that plant height and panicle length had positive direct effects on grain yield, while days to 50% flowering, panicle weight and 100 grain weight showed negative direct effects on grain yield. It is recommended to grow Dekeba genotype under rainfall and irrigated conditions of the Sudan because it had high grain yield (3281 kg/ha), medium height and maturity.
