الملخص
This study explores ‘Womanism’ as a theory, practice, and approach as depicted in African American women’s novels, ‘Jonah’s Gourd Vine’ (1934) and ‘Their Eyes Were Watching God’ (1937) by Zora Neale Hurston and ‘The Bluest Eye’ (1970) and ‘Beloved’ (1987) by Toni Morrison. African American women have been excluded from women’s rights movements, history, and theory for centuries due to their race. Their dilemma is shaped by various forms of oppression, racism, classism, and sexism, operating at different levels, intellectual, social, institutional, and cultural. Therefore, African American women struggle to form their theoretical and practical bodies to resist European hegemony which dominates all domains of life and to regain their rights as humans. Alice Walker’s model, womanism, bases a theoretical and practical platform for black women to address their experiences. Womanism is depicted in the novels of African American women writers, Hurston and Morrison, who demonstrate the depth of the term, womanism, which is deeply rooted in the black women’s culture. As it is noticed in the analysis of Hurston’s and Morrison’s novels, the proposed ‘Womanist approach’ to literature adequately provides tools to analyze literary texts written by African American women, whose experiences are very complex and unique. Due to the complexity of the African American women’s experiences as reflected in their literary texts, the researcher adopts the interdisciplinary approach, encompassing a number of approaches.
