الملخص

This study was executed to investigate the effect of dietaryNigella sativa seeds (black cumin) on the levels of plasma variouslipid fraction in diabetic rabbits.Sixteen local rabbits, of one and half years age, were dividedinto four groups (A, B, C and D). Groups A and C were used ascontrol (normal and diabetic respectively) and fed on pure dura.Groups B and D (normal and diabetic respectively) diet was replacedby 15% of black cumin seeds. The treatment continued for one andhalf month from August to October. Serum samples were collectedevery two weeks for determination of glucose, total lipids, totalcholesterol, phospholipids, triacylglycerols and very low densitylipoprotein-cholesterol concentrations. The statistical analysis of datarevealed that feeding 15% of black cumin to normal and diabeticrabbits lead to no significant reduction in glucose, total lipids, totalcholesterol, phospholipids triacylglycerols and very low densitylipoprotein cholesterol compared to the control groups. The decreasing effect appeared from week 2 up to week 4 ingroup B in total lipids, phospholipids triacylglycerols, glucose andvery low density lipoprotein cholesterol, while in this groupcholesterol started to decline after week 4. In group D the decreasingeffect appeared from week 2 up to week 4 in triacylglycerols and verylow density lipoprotein cholesterol, while in this group the concentrationsof total lipids and total cholesterol began to increase in week 2then declined by the end of week 4, but the phospholipids and glucoselevels began to decrease slightly in week 2 then elevated by the end of9the study period. The control group A kept nearly the same levels ofglucose and all lipid fraction throughout the experimental period, while the diabetic control group C showed elevation of total lipids, total cholesterol and phospholipids throughout the study period, andshowed fluctuating manner during the course of the study in glucose, triacylglycerols and very low density lipoproteins cholesterolsconcentration.
