الملخص

The aim of this study was to investigate the potential use of remotesensing and the Geographical Information Systems (GIS) in assessing andmonitoring sand encroachment as a desertification indicator in semi-aridenvironments.The study used the integration of remote sensing and GIS ininterpretation and compilation of three satellite images of differentperiods (1972, 1986, and 1996) with the aid of literature, questionnaireand field check.The study revealed that the area was invaded by sand and the areanorth latitude 14o 30` is almost totally covered by sand and parts of theGezira scheme had been abandoned from cultivation due to the buriedchannels and the destroyed gravity irrigation system.The main result of this study is that the integration of remotesensing and GIS as cost effective tools is appropriate and reliable formonitoring and assessing des
