In this work, we propose to test the effect of a bacterial polysaccharide on the structural stability of a sandy loam soil. We have for this, chosen an exopolysaccharide producing bacterium (strain Bf01), which belongs to the Burkholderia fungorum species. We experimented the addition of the EPS Bf01 to the soil under two concentrations (0,5 and 1%) following the method of Henin et Monnier (1956) and Le Bissonnais (1988) as modified by Bennadji (1996). The addition of EPS BF01 gives the soil aggregates greater resistance, intensity of which differs depending on the constraints imposed by each test. Generally we notice that the disintegration is inversely proportional to the amount of EPS added. Cohesion indices (CI) of the control are characterized, compared to other treatments, by their extremes: a CI maximum for the average fraction (250 μm - 2 mm) minimum for the light fraction (50 μm - 250 μm) and null for the coarse fraction (2 mm - 4 mm). Also, the cohesion of the average fraction structure is more important than the ones of other fractions. This is valid for the three treatments. The EPS enriched treatments reacted in the same way. However, the addition of EPS increased the cohesion of the aggregates of the light fraction and the coarse fraction is reappearing. The calculation of Mean Weight Diameter (MWD), a factor which brings together the results as a comprehensive index shows that the soil of Biskra transposes from an unstable state (control soil) to a stable physical condition after addition of the polysaccharide Bf01and this is valid for the two EPS concentrations tested.
