الملخص
Background: Internationally and locally, infection control and prevention is one of the major challenges that are facing the healthcare sector. This issue was tackled through different means, such as the implementation of the standards stated by the healthcare accreditation organization. Purpose: To assess the impact of Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation on the Infection Control Key Performance Indicators in Dubai Hospital (DH). Methodology: A longitudinal case study was conducted in which a triangulation method was followed. Secondary data of the Infection Control Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), during the study period (2007 – 2013), were collected along with a semi-structured interview with the Consultant of the Intensive Care Unit, Chairman of the Infection Control Committee, and the In-charge of the Sterile Pharmaceutical Compounding Unit, Infection Control Committee Member in Dubai Hospital. Multivariate analysis, interrupted time series regression and bivariate analysis were used to evaluate the secondary data using the SPSS 20 (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) software and a thematic analysis of the transcribed interviews was conducted. Findings: The analysis indicates a significant change in the level of three out of four Infection Control (IC) KPIs: Ventilator Associated Pneumonia (VAP), Central Line Associated Blood Stream Infection (CLABSI), and Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infection (CAUTI) immediately after the adoption of the JCI accreditation. The IC KPIs’ trend (VAP, CLABSI, and CAUTI) was declining before the JCI accreditation, except for the Surgical Site Infection (SSI) which was increasing. The IC KPIs trend continued to decline after the JCI accreditation. Moreover, the qualitative data analysis reveals that the healthcare accreditation acts as a catalyst that provides a guide for implementing and monitoring changes. Conclusion: The quantitative and qualitative findings display a potentially positive impact of the JCI accreditation on the Infection Control KPIs. Therefore, some of the recommendations in the area of Infection Control and healthcare accreditation include improving surveillance systems and reporting, ensuring proper resource and fund allocation, and encouraging further research.
