Detection of Schistosoma mansoni eggs in the urine of urinery shistomsomiasis patients at Al-Azozab (Khartoum)

الملخص

This community based descriptive study was conducted in Alazozab area (westernKhartoum).The objective of this study is to identify the frequency of the presence of S. mansonieggs in urine of patients with urinary schistosomiasis.Participants (100 males, aged between 14-22 years) were recruited from Alazozab area(West Khartoum) where the White Nile protruded to form stagnant pay. The area isknown of being endemic with S. haematobium. Urine examination for S. haematobiumwas performed for each participant by sedimentation method of end stream urine.Clinical examination for cardinal signs was conducted.The overall prevalence of urinary schistosomiasis was 36%, among which 30% wasinfected with S. haematobium alone and 6% were found mixed with S. mansoni. Thecardinal signs of urinary schistosomiasis (macrohaematuria, microhaematuria, andproteinuria) were most prevalent among individuals with high egg count. We confirmedthat there was no spill-out or contamination of specimens.This study concluded that the frequency of S. mansoni eggs found in urine of studypopulation was 6% and it was found mixed with S. haematobium..
