Influence of seed aging on germination,and (quality) vigor of sweet pepper ( Capsicum annuum . L ) seeds

الملخص

Two laboratory experiments were conducted in the year 2002 to evaluate the influence of aging on the germination and vigor of sweet pepper seeds. The two experiments were carried out at Seed Administration Lab., Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Forests, Khartoum. The first one was carried out under normal room temperature, while the other was carried out under controlled conditions (germination room 20 =617; 1 =616; C) . Four seedlots of sweet pepper were aged by controlled deterioration at three levels of seed moisture content 10% , 19% and 23% at constant temperature 45 =616;C for 24, 48 and 72 hours , then seed germination, mean germination time, emergence and mean emergence time were evaluated . The results of both experiments revealed that:- - No significant differences in germination percentage and mean germination time between the four seed lots at 10 % seed moisture content and 45=616; C for 24 hours . At 23% moisture content, and 72 hours aging duration the germination percentage was reduced, where as the mean germination time was increased . -There was a significant reduction in emergence percentage and a significant increase in mean emergence time, when the aging duration and seed moisture content of the aged seed were increased to 23% at 45=616;C . -Aging for the longest time (72hours) reflected a reduction in seedling length and seedling fresh weight without significant effect on seedling dry weight . -The interaction between the aging duration and seed moisture content had a significant effect on mean emergence time only . The emergence and the mean emergence time were found to be more suitable for evaluation of seed aging on seed quality.
