- The Hafir (Water Reservoir) played an important role inMeroities life, it was the back bone of their economic activities ,and through these Hafirs the Kings of Meroe controlled andmanaged to use the difficult parts of their land. These factorsenriched and enlarged their Kingdom. However, these Hafirs were not sufficiently studied orcorrectly interpreted in the past. Scholars did not explain the roleplayed by these Hafirs to Meroities , and their life cycle .It is clear from these simple studies that these Hafirs wereheavily distributed over the Butana land during the Meroitic periodand their locations were very important from economical andpolitical point of view. This proves the important of the Hafirs. The researcher sheds light on these Hafirs and their role andtheir surroundings , and clear the obscurity which relates to theseHafirs.According to the distribution and the large number of theseHafirs , the researcher chose a sample of the most important Hafirsand surveyed them. Moreover ,an archaeological test excavationwas carried out to the Hafir of the Sun Temple as case study. TheHafir was completely surveyed and the dimensions of the Hafirwere taken. Squares were also excavated and an architecturalanalysis of the building material was carried out to identify thebuilding technique and also the archaeological finds wereinvestigated. From the result of the study, it was obvious that, most ofHafirs faced erosion which caused their destruction and the bestexample is the Hafir of the Sun Temple. In addition , there isanother factor of destruction, which is human activity and the bestexample is that of the Hafir of Mussawarat es Sufra .From the field work, the building technique of the Hafir, andthe building foundation were identified. The researcher noticedthat, the wall of the Hafir was built of a substance that preventedمwater leak . in addition, the excavated squares inside the Hafirshowed the strata, and no archaeological finds were present. Thediameter of the Hafir was also measured. To obtain the needed information, the researcher executedfurther fieldwork like interviews , surveys , and taking photographsespecially of Hafir Umm Daunban in Khartoum North as anexample of a modern Hafir. This Hafir offered valuableinformation concerning the Hafir and it’s function, and itsbuilding technique, the obtained information was applied toMeroitic Hafirs .To conclude ,this study is give a clear scientific frame workabout these Hafirs and their role in Meroites life cycle .The studyalso manifests the similarity between the Meroitic Hafirs andmodern ones, and clarify building technique of Meroitic Hafirs.
