الملخص

Healthcare Waste (HCW) constitutes a special category of waste because it contains potentially harmful materials; inadequate management of HCW can be associated with risks to healthcare workers, patients, communities and the environment. The problem of how to manage HCW has become one of critical concerns in developing countries. The present study was conducted in Khartoum North teaching hospital –Khartoum state –Sudan during the year 2011. The objectives of study were to evaluate the current approaches and practices of waste collection, segregation, packaging, transport, storage conditions and disposal systems in the Khartoum North hospital and study knowledge, attitudes, and practices towards health care waste hazards among cleaners at Khartoum North hospital, the study covered 80 workers. The tools used in the study were a questionnaire, check list & interviews test and SPSS-software for the collected data analysis. The study revealed that despite of segregation the waste at source, it was mixed in the hospital storage area and the disposal of the waste is without treatment. The majority of cleaners had good attitudes and practices regarding (HCW), but they had medium level of knowledge information about health care waste hazard. There are statistically significant relations between educational level & sex with attitudes, also sex with knowledge. Provision of proper treatment before final disposal like modern incineration and development of clear plans and policies for proper management and disposal of HCW, were the main recommendations of the study.
