The study aimed to demonstrate the extent to which food security is affected by urban sprawl in the Irbid governorate. This was achieved by identifying the main causes and trends of urban sprawl and the decrease in the area of agricultural land, determining the extent to which agricultural crop production (fields, vegetables, and fruitful trees) is affected, and showing the reality of agricultural holdings. The study used the descriptive approach and statistical analysis to extract the results, where data on urban sprawl were collected by downloading and processing satellite visuals of the study area through the use of remote sensing (RS) technology. The distribution of land cover and land-use was also arrived at by calculating the change ratios between 1985 and 2020. One measure of statistical dispersionwas used by representing the Lorenz curve and applying the Gini coefficient to show the reality of agricultural holdings for the year 2017. The study determined the amount of the annual per capita share of the three crops using the (EVIEWS) program for statistical analysis to measure the impact of the dependent variable (annual per capita share) with the independent variables (cultivated area, population, production quantity) for the time span 1985-2020. The results of the study showed that the urban sprawl was visible from the eastern, northern and southern sides, but the valleys prevented that from the western side of the governorate. The results showed a noticeable decrease in the area of arable land and thus an increase in the area of urban land. This clearly reduced the annual per capita share of the three crops, because of the inability of crop production to keep pace with population growth due to natural population growth and forced migration from neighboring countries. The resultsalso showed the lack of equity in distributing agricultural holdings in the governorate. The study recommended limiting the issuing of building permits and licenses on fertile agricultural land, establishing regulatory and binding legislations by the Ministry of Municipalities in cooperation with relevant bodies, and encouraging construction in rough and less fertile land. It also recommended encouraging large holders to produce crops and considering them a key partner in achieving the food security system.
