A DISCOURSAL ANALYSIS OF LEXICAL BUNDLES IN BRITISH ENGLISH POLITICAL SPEECHES

الملخص

Lexical bundles refer to sequences of three or more words that recur frequently in natural language use. This term has been used for the first time in The Longman Grammar for Spoken and Written English by Biber et al. (1999) in which it is studied in a large corpus of both American and British English conversation and academic prose. This thesis is an attempt to study lexical bundles in eighteen political speeches delivered by three British prime ministers: David Cameron, Tony Blair, and Gordon Brown, since no attention has been paid to the study of lexical bundles in political speeches. In this regard, this study attempts at achieving the following aims: Finding out whether the types of functions used in the political speech match those mentioned in Biber et al.'s (2006) model of analysis for lexical bundles functions. Finding out what types of functions that are not used in the political speech. Investigating the frequencies of these functions in the genre of political speeches, that is, the most widely used function in political speeches, and the least used function. In accordance with the above aims, it is hypothesized that: The genre of political speeches displays most of the functions mentioned in Biber et al. (2006) model of analysis. The two functions, tangible framing attribute and imprecision indicators, are not used in political speeches. The most widely used function is the specification of attribute function, which displays the highest frequency of occurrence. The least used function is the epistemic stance function. To achieve the aims of this study, certain procedures have been followed: Providing a general review on phraseology in order to explore its limits and to show the position of lexical bundles within it. Surveying the theoretical background on lexical bundles, reviewing the most important models for the analysis. Analyzing the data following Biber et al.'s (2004) model for the functional analysis of lexical bundles. This study comes up with a number of findings: The genre of political speeches displays most of the functions mentioned in Biber et al.'s (2006) model of analysis except two functions. Accordingly, the first hypothesis is verified. The tangible framing attribute and the imprecision indicators function do not appear in the analyzed texts. This means that the second hypothesis is verified. The most widely used function is the specification of attribute function, which displays the highest frequency of occurrence. This conclusion agrees with the third hypothesis. The least used function is the epistemic stance. This means that the fourth hypothesis is also verified. The study is divided into four chapters. Chapter One introduces the problem, aims, hypotheses, procedures, limits, and value of the study. Chapter Two is devoted to the theoretical framework on lexical bundles. Chapter Three presents a practical analysis of lexical bundles in the selected texts. Chapter Four sums up some conclusions and introduces pedagogical recommendations and suggestions for further research work.
