Aim of the research:To investigate the prevalence and patterns of astigmatism, and its relation to age and gender in patients attending to the ophthalmology clinic at Aleppo University Hospital.Materials and Methods:This cross-sectional study included 532 eyes of 532 patients aged between 5-90 years (mean 43.33 years), of whom 230 were males (43.23%) and 302 females (56.77%). The magnitude and pattern of astigmatism was determined for all patients.Results: Astigmatism of ≥0.5D was found in 218 patients, accounting 40.98%of the population studied. Astigmatism was more common in the older age groups, with prevalence rate of 33.33% for ages 5-10 years and 48% for ages 60 and over (P = 0.018). The prevalence of astigmatism was almost similar in both genders(40.87% for males, 41.06% for females, P = 0.973). Astigmatism type was With The Rule (WTR) for 23.31% of patients in the study, Against The Rule (ATR) in 14.66% of the patients in the study, and oblique in 3.01% of the patients. WTR was the most common type at the younger ages(≤20 years) with rate of 31.57% compared to 2.63% of the ATR type. Whereas ATR type was more common in the older age groups >40 years, leveling of 21.33%, compared with 18.66% of WTR type.Conclusions : Astigmatism spreading is equally between both genders, and becomes more common with advanced ages. Younger ages tend to have WTR type, while older ages tend to have ATR type. There is no difference between males and females in the types of astigmatism
